Porto de Galinhas (Port of Chickens in English) is 30 miles (57 Km) south of Recife. It is a great tourist attraction because of its fantastic beaches. When slave traffic was prohibited, the word "chickens" became the code name for slaves. This is where the name of the town is dervied from. The surrounding sea is characterized by reefs that make it almost like a fish tank. In the natural pools they create tourists can dive among the many colorful fish. In low tide you can walk to these pools, but the best way is to rent a raft along the beach. You can get any equipment by renting in the town. It is a great beach getaway with a well developed infrastructure for the tourist searching for a special sun and surf haven.
